The power of attention to meditate
All religions preach the abandonment of selfishness. but nobody knows how to do: perhaps suggest to do some 'charity or humiliation. It is not so. This is a simplistic way to see the problem.
The best way is to become aware of, observe. As noted with interest something, you actually forget about yourself, get out of yourself from your ego. For a while 'is not you're more yourself, do not you think of yourself and your ego disappears. ego steps to non-ego. Miracles of mindfulness. Try to be totally present in something - where does your bulky ego?
doing so, it a taste of enlightenment, which is actually an expansion of ego boundaries.
In this state the limits of expansion is also in a state of non-suffering. That's why it says in the Dhammapada, the Buddhist important work, that "attention leads to immortality, while the heedless are already as dead."
Exercise of attention. You get to expand the boundaries of ego and everything will appear in a different light.
Not surprisingly, with death, even the ego is bound to dissolve. But this does not dissolve the being, on the contrary, it expands.
